23 Things on a Stick

A library learning 2.0 project

I was just wondering when/where everyone else is finding the time to do the 23 Things? I really enjoy it, but some days it is hard to fit it in, so I am doing it from the comforts of my home too ;-) as well as a little bit at Caribou the other day :-)

Ugh, this has been the main roadblock in my attempt to finish the 23 Things ... both first round and second round (I'm *still* not quite done). I can't really work on it at the reference desk because so many of the applications require sound. Plus ... I don't know if I want a library patron peering over the desk at my FB site ... or my Flickr account. In any case, I did do some of it at home, but again, after putting the kids to bed, cleaning the kitchen, changing the cat litter, &etc. what I want to do is sit DOWN with a BOOK and escape ... not delve into pseudo-work. So, I've been squeezing it in at my off-desk time, juggling it with selection and storytime planning. Now that it's December (and we can't do a whole lot of selection until the 09 budget kicks in), I have a bit more time. TWO MORE STEPS. Sigh ...

You don't find the time, you have to make the time. I consider it to be part of my job description. I work at a HS library and am also half time Tech Support. You have to be familiar with what is out there and what the kids are looking at and using and be able to use the tools yourself. I love learning new things, you have to be open to new ideas and be able to work smarter, not just harder.

A little during work, a little lost sleep...

During my evening shift at work. I probably spend too much time on it at work but when I get home I don't want to see a computer!

Responding about "More things on a stick" at this point....I am determined to complete these next 23 things completely on lunch breaks. There's no other way I can fit this into my work schedule, and I don't believe in bringing my work home. Lunch breaks are therefore the perfect middle ground for me.

I
I worked on 23 Things while at the circ. desk.
With More Things,I spent most of Sunday working on Thing 25 while watching movies and snacking.
A new laptop for Christmas didn't hurt either.

I try and work on the 23 Things at the office for just 30 minutes. So far work has not been that busy and I can do this.
I do it at work to learn how to use the internet in more areas, and can then advise our attorneys and staff. At least that is the plan.
Also, I work part time, and do not have any budget to attend conferences, or do too much networking, so I figure this is how I will make contacts, and network.
I would also like to work on this from home, but I seem to get busy with the chores around home, that the blog work never gets done. I'll see if that can change or not.

I try to do it at least once a week but it is difficult to find the time. But I like it so I will try to keep it up.

I didn't do the first 23 Things, so am starting with More Things. I'm doing what a couple others do - take 30 minutes at work (either at the beginning or end of the day) and do a few things (usually read online), or I carve out some time on the laptop while watching mindless TV (I'm not missing much). I find that I want to "get into" each Thing just a little bit, and then come back and work on the ones that are the most interesting. For example, I kind of blew by Twitter - utterly useless to me so far - but am really into making a customized home page on iGoogle. Hmmm.

Take a look at the Minnesota Historical Society's Twitter page (http://twitter.com/mnhs) to give you an example of how you might use it as a library, rather than as an individual (although it's not the MHS Library that's doing that page!). I think your library's clientele will dictate whether Twitter is a useful tool for you. If a lot of them Twitter, then it's worthwhile for you to think about having a presence there and what kind of information you would put there.

Even if I would obtain permission to do 23 Things at work, there wouldn't be more than 15 minutes a week to work on it, and then only in 5 minute increments. My hubby works nights, so I do most of it right after he leaves. A co-worker and I are helping each other and we are trying to meet at a local coffee shop when we need help with things that are confusing. I feel like I would get more out of this program if I really had the time to delve into some of the things of which I'm not familiar/comfortable.

I never find time to do this at work, and I've spent many an hour doing it at home. It's fun, addictive, and yet I feel a bit like I'm neglecting other responsibilities. To really apply these suggestions, one would have to spend a tremendous amount of time on this every week if not every day. I guess I need to look at this as exposure and let what fits the best to my situation stick.
